2. General information about the faculty

Mathematics and physics have been studied at the Comenius University since the Faculty of Science was established in 1940. Initially, the two subjects were studied by teachers-to-be only, later specialist studies in these two fields were introduced. Next study field – informatics – was added in 1973 (named theoretical cybernetics and mathematical informatics). Mathematics, physics and informatics separated from the Faculty of Science in 1980 to form the new Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, which was given its present name in 2000. Since the faculty was founded, it has been one of the largest and most research-oriented faculties of the Comenius University. The primary objective of the faculty is to promote the advance of scientific knowledge in mathematics, physics and informatics, as well as to provide high quality academic education based on research output.

4. General requirements on entering the faculty studies

The Bachelor Degree

The basic requirement for enrolling at the faculty is the completion of general or special secondary education. At the entering exams, full knowledge of general secondary school is tested, as well as the applicant’s ability to apply it in problem solutions. Applicants for informatics and applied mathematics studies ought to be familiar with one of the programming languages. Knowledge of at least one foreign language is desirable.

The candidate is allowed to submit one application form only, applying for maximum three study courses in order of preference. It is strongly recommended to take the opportunity of applying for alternative study programmes. After the application has been registered, the candidate will be notified of the details of the entrance examinations, not later than 30 days in advance. If the candidate cannot take part in the examination on the given date due to its collision with exams at another faculty, he/she may ask for alternative date and do so within given time period.

As a rule, most applicants for the Bachelor courses will be enrolled in the first academic year without the entering examinations. Requirements and conditions for the particular academic year are given by the Academic Senate. Other applicants are required to reach the examination scores within given limits. The entering examination is taken in a written form and covers the following subjects (the study programme and subject(s) tested, respectively):

Mathematics – mathematics
Mathematics for economics and finance – mathematics
Mathematics for management – mathematics
Mathematics for insurance – mathematics
Physics – mathematics, physics
Biomedical physics – physics, biology
Informatics – mathematics, informatics
Applied informatics – mathematics, informatics
Teaching of academic subjects
– subjects involved

The applicants for the Mathematics – Physical education programme must successfully pass tests in sports.

The Master Degree

The basic requirement for the Master courses is the completion of a Bachelor study programme. On entering Master courses the applicant must prove good knowledge of the acceptable preceding Bachelor programme.

The candidate is allowed to submit only one application, stating maximum three study programmes in order of preference. It is strongly recommended to take the opportunity of applying for alternative study programmes. After the application has been registered, the candidate will be notified of the details of the entrance examination, not later than 30 days in advance. If the candidate cannot take part in the examination on the stated date, he/she may ask for the alternative date, doing so within the given time period.

In certain cases (if the candidate passed excellently the Bachelor courses), the entrance examination is not required. Requirements and conditions for such cases for given academic year are given by the Academic Senate of the faculty.

PhD Study

Graduates or students of the last study year of the Master, Engineer or Doctor (previous form of PhD study) university study in any study programme can apply for PhD study at the Faculty. In the application the following, besides other information, is given by the applicant: the study programme, topic of dissertation thesis, supervisor and form of PhD study (daily form, i.e. with stipend, or external form). The topic of dissertation thesis is chosen by the applicant from the list of dissertation theses topics for applicants for PhD study.

The entrance interview consists of two parts:

  1. Written test examining the basic knowledge in the field.
  2. Personal interview by the entrance committee. It is aimed at attestation of the applicant's preconditions for PhD study in the selected field, a more detail specification of the supervisor's proposal and the topic of dissertation thesis and discussion on applicant's conception and plans and his/her scientific programme.

Applicant for PhD study in external form can, on the base of his/her publication activities, ask for omitting the written test in the field.

Conditions for foreign citizens to enter the Faculty:

Applicants for the study from foreign countries have to comply with conditions equivalent with those for inland applicants for the study.

5. Possibilities of accommodation and board, provision of health care

Successful applicants have the possibility to ask for allocation of accommodation at a dormitory. Students of our Faculty are, as a rule, accommodated at Študentský domov Ľudovíta Štúra, Staré Grunty (Ľudovít Štúr Dormitory, Staré Grunty). Part of the rooms has access to Internet. For allocation of accommodation the following is decisive: study performance reached at secondary school and the necessary condition of the applicant's residence being in distance at least 51 km from the Faculty. Board for all the students is provided at students’ dining-halls. Classrooms, library and other facilities of the Faculty have, in most cases, a non-barrier access.

6. Scholarship fees and other charges

The fee for foreign citizens who pay for their study themselves is, at all the degrees of the study - € 10000 annually.

7. Libraries, leisure

Students can use the services of the library, which is a part of the Faculty Library and Editing Centre and where books, periodicals, diploma and dissertation theses, audiocassettes and CD ROMs are available. In 2005, the library will purchase students’ literature worth 1 m Sk. The students of the Faculty have an access to the Internet in computer labs which are connected to the computer net of the Faculty linked to Sanet by two optical lines operating at 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps.
