Programme sequentiality
This program is continuation of the bachelor degree program in managerial mathematics. Students having finished this master program can continue in the doctoral study program in this branch of study and obtain the PhD. title.
Brief history of the study programme
The study program Managerial mathematics is the continuation of the branch study Mathematics – management which was founded in our Faculty in 1994 as the response to the changes in our society after the year 1989. In the aim to relate high quality mathematical education with the imperative of society for high level managers in the new emerging competitive markets environment, our faculty and the Faculty of Management of Comenius University founded this new and very vital study branch. Its vitality can be judged after a plenty of graduates of the program who are actually among top managers in private sector and also in many important positions in administration.
Requirements on study applicant (Requirements for acceptance)
The choice rules and the claims on the study candidates are specified every year by the guarantor of the program and are approved by the Academic senate of the Faculty. Following actually valid rules the candidate for the study in master program of Managerial mathematics must have finished the bachelor program in this program or other similar program. The graduates of bachelor program Managerial mathematics at the Faculty of mathematics, physics and informatics can be exempted by the dean of the Faculty of entrance examination for the master program in Managerial mathematics.
Educational and professional objectives
The aim of this study program is, in close cooperation with the top teachers of Faculty of Management, to educate specialists for the segment of labour market, which requires the conjunction of exact thinking and managerial skills.
Subject focus and brief description
The subjects taught in the program can be classified into 4 blocks:
- The block of mathematical subjects.
- The block of informatics based subjects.
- The block of managerial oriented subjects
- The block of economic end finance oriented subjects.
There is a set of optional subjects in which the student can gain some more credits from mathematics, economics, physical education and foreign languages. It can be seen from this that the student having completed the bachelor study program will acquire an equilibrated education in various domains characterized by corresponding subject blocks.
Examination and evaluation rules:
The examination and evaluation is based on the European credit standard ECTS which facilitates the transfer of credits from other similarly oriented school either in home or in foreign country. The following four conditions are necessary and sufficient to finish successfully the study of the program:
- To obtain 120 credits.
- To pass all compulsory subjects of the study program.
- To defend a master thesis.
- To pass successfully the state examination to which candidate is allowed to, having satisfied conditions in items 1 and 2.

The graduate of the master study program Managerial mathematics will deepen its knowledge acquired in the bachelor study program and will acquire the following knowledge, aptitudes, and skills:
- The complete second degree education in the branch of applied mathematics.
- The aptitude to apply on its own the exact mathematical procedures in the domains of management, finance and insurance.
- Survey of usage of quantitative methods in managerial practice and their effective usage.
- Ability to create autonomously complexe database applications in solving practical problems.
- Knowledge allowing to create computer simulations and optimisation programs which facilitates the managerial decision.
- Easy way to communicate with economic specialists and the ability to transform vaguely formulated problems into exact mathematical form which can be processed by experts in a given domain of mathematics or computing and eventually he will be able to solve this problems on his own.
Graduates' competence and job opportunities
The graduate of the program Managerial mathematics has good knowledge of foreign languages (fluent English is a must) and thanks to high quality and structure of education he acquires the exact thinking skills which he may use in various domains of social practice. The most typical jobs occupied by managers – mathematicians are:
- From medium to highest degree positions of managers in private and state firms or in public administration.
- Positions in banking and insurance (data processing, statistical analysis, analysis and programming of given economic applications).
- Quantitative modelling of various economic and social processes.
- The graduates of the master degree will be prepared to continue the doctoral degree of the program either at the Comenius University or at the Universities abroad (actually several of them continue in the Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education – Economic Institute in Prague).
Present experience with the former study branch mathematics – management shows that the majority of masters find easily very attractive jobs and become very demanded top managers. Small part of graduates continue in the doctoral degree in the branch of study in similar study programs.

Faculty of Management has flourishing contacts with many foreign universities and so the students of the study program Managerial mathematics can spend one or more semesters in foreign universities. It allows students to confirm their foreign languages knowledge and, moreover, to take a new point of view on the globalisation of economy what enlarge considerably the possibility of employment by a multinational firms.
