Brief history of the study programme

Mathematics and Teaching Mathematics has been studied at Comenius University since Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University was founded in 1940. Study programmes of mathematics, physics and informatics were moved to newly founded Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Comenius University that separated from Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University and was renamed to Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics in 2000.

Teaching Mathematics in Combination with other Subjects forms a new form of study, which is knotting with its entity on the present (5 years master form preparation for teachers of mathematics in combination with another teaching object). By its creation it was necessary to approach mainly in term of praxis and international comparability in preparation of future teachers (Declaration of Bologna).

Requirements on study applicant (Requirements for acceptance)

The basic requirement for the Master courses is the completion of a Bachelor study programme. On entering Master courses the applicant must prove good knowledge of the acceptable preceding Bachelor programme. For more details see this faculty link.

Educational and professional objectives

The basic goal of the programme Teaching Mathematics in Combination with other Subjects is to assure superior build up of teachers for primary (pupils age range 11-15) and secondary schools (pupils age range 16-19) and for universities.

Subject focus and brief description

The basic subjects of this study programme:

  • Mathematics and its applications (Mathematical analysis, Algebra, Geometry, Number theory, Set theory, Topology, Graph theory, Financial and Insurance mathematics)
  • Subjects focused onto didactical preparation (Didactics of mathematics, Didactical software in mathematics teaching, Uncoventional methods in mathematics teaching, Methods of mathematical problems solving, Chapters from mathematical education)

Students graduate also subjects of Social and pedagogic-psychological component

(Pedagogy, Psychology and Didactics) which deepen and brighten their knowledge and skills acquired on the 1st level of study (bachelors level).

Graduates' profile

Graduate of this (masters) programme Teaching Mathematics (in Combination with other Subjects) obtains high professional and pedagogical ability in branch Teaching mathematics. He/she understands fundamentals of mathematic branches and is able to join theoretical basis with applications and didactics. He/she is ready to apply theoretical and practical knowledge obntained in masters level of study into the school praxis. He/she is also able to cooperate on development of methodological documents for teaching and has adequate knowledge from investigations methods in didactics of mathematics.

He/she knows modern informatical and communication techologies and is able to use them more effective, attractive and actualization knowledge process in mathematics teaching.

The graduate is ready to continue his/her study on the 3rd level of university education (PhD. Study) in branch Theory of didactics of mathematics or in one of another mathematical study programmes (Geometry and topology, Algebra and number theory, Discrete mathematics, etc.).
